With reference to the impeachment process of the President of India, consider the following statements:
1. The impeachment charges can be initiated in either Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha
2. Both elected as well as nominated members of the Parliament participate in impeachment of President
3. Both elected as well as nominated members of states legislature participate in impeachment of President
Which among the above is / are correct statements?

Answer: [A] Only 1 & 2

The first statement is correct because impeachment charges can be initiated by either House of Parliament. However, the charges should be signed by one-fourth members of the House in which charged were framed; and a 14 days’ notice should be given to the President.
The second statement is correct. The nominated members of either House of Parliament can participate in the impeachment of the President though they do not participate in his election
Third statement is incorrect. The elected members of the legislative assemblies of states and the Union Territories of Delhi and Pondicherry participate in the elections BUT do not participate in the impeachment of President.
