The Government of India act 1919 was passed to introduce self-governing institutions gradually to India. The act was passed on the basis of recommendations of Lord Chelmsford and Samuel Montagu. This act covered 10 years period from 1919 to 1929. The act led to introduction of 'Diarchy system' which divided the provincial subjects into reserved and transferred subjects. The reserved subjects were kept with the Governor and transferred subjects were kept with the Indian Ministers
