Use of phosphate pollutes lakes, bays and streams. It creates algae blooms and starves fish of oxygen. The major drawback is that secondary wasterwater treatment removes only a small percentage of phosphorus from the influent, so a considerable amount of phosphorus is released to streams, rivers, lakes and estuaries through wastewater effluent. The low solubility of phosphates leads to biomagnification.
