Consider the following statements with respect to types of cell division:
- While in mitosis cell divide is asexual reproduction, meiosis is sexual reproduction
- While in mitosis number of chromosomes reduce to half, in meiosis number of chromosome remain same
Which of the above statements is/are correct?
Second statement is incorrect because in case of mitosis the number of chromosome remain same on division, whereas in case of meiosis the number of chromosome reduces to half.
Kindly note the differences in mitosis and meiosis:
While mitosis is a type of asexual production existing in organisms, Meiosis is a type of sexual production existing in plants, animals and humans.
Number of chromosomes remains same in case of mitosis division, whereas it reduces to half in case of meiosis.
No gamete formation takes place in mitosis, whereas gamete formation takes place in case of meiosis division.
In case of mitosis only two daughter cells are produced identical to each, whereas in case of meiosis it gets reduced to 2 daughter cells in each of 4 identical cells.
